March 2028: Equinox on a Monday, 23 Business Days
Dispatch, March 2028: the bracket is on the wall and the month is already behaving like a tournament. Thirty-one days open on Wednesday, March 1. They close on Friday, March 31. Inside them sit 23 business days, the busiest count of the first quarter. Five Wednesdays, five Thursdays and five Fridays stack the back half of the week. The equinox shows up on a Monday, of all things. And the road to a first Las Vegas Final Four runs through all of it.
The quarter's engine
March closes the leap year's first quarter with its heaviest working month: 23 business days, 8 weekend days. Week numbers run 9 through 13 down the five grid rows. Wednesdays meet on the 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th. Thursdays meet on the 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th. Fridays meet on the 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th and 31st.
Plans that need a Friday have five to pick from. The five-Friday count leads the first half of the year; only June matches it. The month ends the quarter on one of them.
Two clock changes and one equinox
The United States springs forward at 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 12. Most of Europe and the United Kingdom follow on Sunday, March 26, two weeks later. In between, the Atlantic time-zone gap runs an hour wider than usual. Every cross-ocean call becomes a small arithmetic exam. The equinox lands on Monday, March 20, spring for the north and autumn for the south. Both clock changes are statutory: the second Sunday of March stateside, the last in Europe.
The moon keeps a lower profile. First quarter arrives on Saturday, March 4. Last quarter arrives on Friday, March 17. The new moon lands on Sunday, March 26, the same morning Europe's clocks jump. The full moon got there first, on Saturday, March 11, the night before the American change. March skies stay eclipse-free as well; the year's early pair belonged to January.
Bracket country
College basketball's March Madness opens with the Opening Round at Dayton and Wichita in mid-March. The exact 2028 round dates were still being confirmed as the month began. The road ends at a first: the men's Final Four at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, with UNLV as host. Semifinals play on Saturday, April 1. The championship game follows on Monday, April 3.
Football's spring runs the same direction. The EURO 2028 play-offs in late March settle the last four tournament places. England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland host the tournament from Friday, June 9. It is the first EURO whose hosts had to qualify on merit, so any of them could land here. Single matches, sudden stakes; matchdays were still to be confirmed.
March 2028 goes out the way it came in, on a working Friday. From Sunday, March 26, the Atlantic is back in step and the bracket is drawn.
