October 2026 Calendar: Five Saturdays, Weeks 40 to 44
October 2026 runs 31 days, opens on a Thursday and closes on a Saturday, with five Thursdays, five Fridays and five Saturdays across weeks 40 to 44. No eclipse came this month, and the sky kept a low profile. The Atlantic stayed record-quiet, too, until the season's first hurricane, Isaias, finally formed in October. It is a long, roomy month: 22 business days, nine weekend days and a grid that rewards planning.
The shape of the month
Five Saturdays land on October 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31, with four Sundays alongside them. The new moon falls around Saturday, October 10; the full Hunter's Moon, around Monday, October 26. Europe's clocks fall back an hour on Sunday, October 25, when daylight saving ends there. North America waits one more week, until November 1.
The Atlantic's record-long wait for a first hurricane ended in October, when Isaias formed. The quiet before it was the longest of the satellite era. Sometimes the weather simply declines to make news.
The working count: 22 business days, nine weekend days. That ninth weekend day is the extra Saturday, the 31st. Give it a job the first four could not fit.
Nobel week and a first-time champion
Nobel week ran October 5 to 9. The medicine prize went to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel for optogenetics, the light-based control of living cells. Canadian poet and classicist Anne Carson won the literature prize on October 8. On October 9, South African judge Navi Pillay, the former UN human rights chief, took the Peace Prize.
Baseball got a guaranteed first-time champion when Milwaukee met Tampa Bay. The Brewers won the World Series in Game 5 on October 28, the first title in franchise history. Crew-13 lifted off for the space station on October 1 with NASA, Roscosmos and Canadian astronauts aboard. It docked the next day in a record 7 hours 55 minutes, a commute worth bragging about.
Earlier, on October 2, the G7 agreed to release 100 million barrels of crude and diesel from emergency reserves. The release runs four months, aimed at cooling fuel prices.
Politics filled the last week. Brazil's runoff on Sunday, October 25 gave Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva a fourth non-consecutive term, 52 to 48. Serbia voted the same day, and a student-led list won about 53 percent. Israel's election on October 27 left the incumbent bloc at 53 of 120 seats, short of a majority.
The month's hardest days
October also carried real grief. A school roof collapsed during morning classes in Peshawar, Pakistan, on October 15. The collapse killed at least 34 children and a teacher. Most of the victims were aged 6 to 12.
On October 28, an AVE high-speed train struck a stationary train near Los Yebanes in Toledo province, Spain. At least 69 people died, and Spain declared three days of national mourning. Both events belong in this month's record, written plainly and kept.
November opens on a Sunday and brings the US midterms on its third day. Print that grid early; the year's last stretch does not slow down.
