April 2026: Moon Shot and a Two-Week Truce
April 2026 will be remembered for two headlines sharing one date. On the 8th, Pakistan brokered a two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran. Oil fell back below 95 dollars a barrel. The same day, Israeli strikes across Lebanon killed at least 254 people and wounded more than 1,100. The grid underneath held steadier: 30 days, a Wednesday start, five Wednesdays, five Thursdays and 22 business days.
A calm grid for a loud month
April 2026 runs from Wednesday, April 1 to Thursday, April 30. Wednesdays and Thursdays appear five times each; every other weekday appears four times. Business days total 22, weekend days 8, across weeks 14 to 18. There is no unlucky 13th this month: it falls on a plain Monday.
The sky stays busy instead. A full moon arrives on the 2nd, last quarter on the 10th. A new moon follows on the 17th, with first quarter on the 24th.
The Lyrid meteor shower peaks around the 22nd, and the new moon keeps that sky usefully dark. The calendar cannot promise clear weather, only the darkness.
Around the Moon and back
Artemis II lifted off on April 1 with astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen. It was the first crewed flight to the Moon since Apollo 17 in 1972. The crew broke Apollo 13's distance record from Earth. They splashed down off San Diego on April 10.
Tech gave the month a second changing of the guard. Apple announced on the 20th that Tim Cook will step down as chief executive after 15 years. Hardware chief John Ternus takes over from September 1.
Ballots and a green jacket
Voters produced one of the year's big turnovers on April 12. Peter Magyar's Tisza Party won a landslide parliamentary majority in Hungary, ending Viktor Orbán's 16-year rule on record turnout. The same day, Rory McIlroy won a second consecutive Masters at Augusta National and kept the green jacket. A jacket you can defend is a rare thing in sport.
War paused, grief did not
The truce of April 8 covered only the United States and Iran. Lebanon was left outside it, and the strikes of that single day killed at least 254 people. In Nigeria on the 11th, an air force strike missed its target and hit the market at Jilli village. Residents and officials reported between 100 and 200 civilians killed.
The cruelest date was the 20th. A magnitude-7.7 earthquake struck off Japan's Sanriku coast, shaking the Tohoku region and briefly triggering tsunami advisories. Authorities reported thousands dead, among the year's worst disasters.
The month also brought a crowd crush at Haiti's Citadelle Laferrière fortress on the 11th, killing at least 30 people. And on the 25th, coordinated attacks in Mali killed the defense minister, and fighters overran Kidal.
Humans flew around the Moon, a war paused for two weeks and the grid held your 22 business days. April 2026 was not a quiet month, only an orderly one.
