February 2026: The Tidiest Month of the Year
February 2026 opened with trophies and ended with the outbreak of a war. On the 1st, Bad Bunny's Debi Tirar Mas Fotos made Grammy history. It was the first Spanish-language album to win Album of the Year. On the 28th, United States and Israeli strikes killed Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. Between those bookends sat the tidiest grid of the year. It packs 28 days, exactly four of every weekday, 20 business days and 8 weekend days.
Four of everything
February 2026 runs 28 days, from Sunday, February 1 to Saturday, February 28. That is four Sundays, four Mondays, four Tuesdays, four Wednesdays, four Thursdays, four Fridays and four Saturdays. No weekday wins and no weekday loses; the month refuses to play favorites. Business days total 20, weekend days 8, across weeks 5 to 9.
The moon keeps a full set. Full on the 1st, last quarter on the 9th, new on the 17th, first quarter on the 24th. Friday the 13th lands on February 13, the first of three in 2026. The new moon of the 17th doubles as an annular, ring-of-fire solar eclipse, so the darkest day gets a show.
Seventeen days of Winter Olympics
The Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics opened at Milan's San Siro on February 6, the first Games awarded to two host cities. They closed at the Arena of Verona on the 22nd. Norway topped the table with a record 41 medals, and Italy finished in the top five.
Seventeen of the month's 28 days belonged to the Games. Two days after the opening ceremony, Seattle won Super Bowl LX, beating New England 29-13. It avenged a title-game loss to the same opponent a decade earlier. If your wall calendar kept a blank square through all that, it was not for lack of sport.
Prizes and ballots
The Grammy night of February 1 also gave Kendrick Lamar five awards, including Record of the Year. That day in Melbourne, Carlos Alcaraz came from a set down to beat Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open final. At 22, he became the youngest man to complete the career Grand Slam. Costa Rica elected Laura Fernandez in the first round, with about 48 percent of the vote.
Diplomacy had a harder month. New START, the last United States-Russia strategic arms control treaty, expired on February 5. The two largest nuclear arsenals were left without mutual limits for the first time in over half a century.
The month's hard edge
February carried real grief alongside its medals. Masked gunmen assassinated Saif al-Islam Gaddafi at his home in Zintan on February 3. A bombing at a Shia mosque in Islamabad killed more than 30 people during Friday prayers on the 6th.
And on the 28th, United States and Israeli strikes on Iran killed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Tehran retaliated against American bases and closed the Strait of Hormuz. The war's full cost fell to the months that followed.
Four of everything, one ring of fire and seventeen straight days of Olympics. February 2026 was short and wasted nothing.
