February 2027: A Perfect Rectangle and a Stacked Sunday
Dispatch, February 2027: the month is a perfect rectangle. Twenty-eight days, Monday the 1st through Sunday the 28th, and every weekday occurs exactly four times. Not one of them sneaks in a fifth visit. The sky doubles down: an annular solar eclipse on Saturday, February 6 and a penumbral lunar eclipse on Saturday, February 20. Our correspondent has cleared the evenings. Sunday, February 21 bills the Daytona 500, the NBA All-Star Game in Phoenix and the BAFTAs in London on one date.
Four of everything
The arithmetic stays calm for once: 28 days, 20 business days, 8 weekend days and weeks 5 to 8. Saturdays fall on February 6, 13, 20 and 27. Sundays fall on February 7, 14, 21 and 28. No leap day disturbs the pattern, so the grid prints as a clean four-by-seven block.
The moon runs one phase per week: new February 6, first quarter February 14, full February 20 and last quarter February 28, each within a day either way. The month keeps lunar time like a metronome.
A four-by-seven month is the easiest grid to divide. Four Mondays mean four weekly check-ins; four Fridays mean four small finishes. Weekly routines map onto it with nothing left over.
Two eclipses, two Saturdays
The annular solar eclipse of Saturday, February 6 shares its date with the new moon, leaving a ring of sunlight at peak. Eye protection is not optional, because a ring of sun is still sun. The penumbral lunar eclipse of Saturday, February 20 is quieter: a gray shading as the moon crosses Earth's outer shadow, subtle but findable with a patient eye; both land on Saturdays this year. For the lunar one, a clear view of the rising moon matters more than equipment.
The Sundays worth planning around
Super Bowl LXI lands Sunday, February 14 at SoFi Stadium, the first scheduled on that date. England hosts France in London the same day, and the first-quarter moon lights the evening. A week later, Sunday, February 21 runs the Daytona 500, the NBA All-Star Game in Phoenix and the BAFTA Film Awards in London, all inside one another's broadcast windows. Phoenix hosts its first All-Star Game since 2009.
All-Star weekend fills Friday, February 19 to Sunday, February 21. NASCAR opens its season even earlier, with the Clash at Daytona on Saturday, February 13. The FIS Alpine World Ski Championships at Crans-Montana decide 11 world titles between February 1 and 14. The Six Nations starts first of all: Ireland against England in Dublin on Friday, February 5, a championship that runs into March.
Four of everything, two eclipses, three finals on one Sunday. The rectangle holds.
