February 2025: perfectly balanced, four of each weekday
February 2025 was the calendar at its most even-tempered: 28 days, starting on a Saturday, exactly four of every weekday. Four Sundays, four Mondays, four Tuesdays, straight down the line. There was no leap day anywhere in 2025, and none arrives until 2028. The month spanned weeks 5 to 9. If you ever wanted a month that treats every weekday fairly, this was the one.
Four of everything
A 28-day month beginning on a Saturday gives four of each weekday, never five. That works out to 20 business days and 8 weekend days. Four Fridays and four Saturdays kept the weekend column even. The month closed on Friday, February 28, and a new moon landed the same day.
The arithmetic is almost silly in its neatness. The full Snow Moon rose on Wednesday, February 12. First quarter came on February 5 and last quarter on February 20, evenly spaced around it. February cannot help itself.
Songs, football and a polite asteroid
The 67th Grammys opened the month on February 2. Beyoncé finally won Album of the Year for Cowboy Carter, becoming the first Black woman to win Best Country Album. Kendrick Lamar's “Not Like Us” took Record and Song of the Year.
A week later came Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans. On February 9, the Philadelphia Eagles beat the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22. The Chiefs were denied the NFL's first Super Bowl three-peat. Kendrick Lamar played the halftime show, bookending the game.
Asteroid 2024 YR4's odds of striking Earth in 2032 peaked at 3.1 percent on February 18. That was the highest ever recorded for an asteroid of its size. Fresh observations collapsed the odds to effectively zero within a week. The asteroid, clearly, had read the room.
Money, ballots and box offices
Tariff orders signed on February 1 imposed 25 percent duties on Canada and Mexico and 10 percent on China. The two neighbors won a 30-day pause on February 3; Beijing answered with counter-tariffs. Germany voted on February 23: Friedrich Merz's conservatives won, and the far-right AfD took a postwar-record second place. Busy month for a short one.
Apple unveiled the $599 iPhone 16e on February 19, on sale February 28. It is the budget model, and the first carrying Apple's in-house C1 modem. The Chinese animated sequel Ne Zha 2 kept filling theaters too. It passed $2 billion and became the world's highest-grossing animated film during February, almost entirely on Chinese tickets.
February 2025 gave every weekday its fair share, then handed off. Next stop: a March with ten weekend days.
