October 2028: Five Sundays, One Friday the 13th
Dispatch, October 2028: the month opens on a Sunday, stacks five Sundays, five Mondays and five Tuesdays, and then turns out the lights. October runs 31 days, from Sunday, October 1 to Tuesday, October 31, across weeks 39 to 44. The full moon rises on Tuesday, October 3. The month's real mood arrives with the new moon on Wednesday, October 18: the late nights, World Series window included, go moonless. Kennedy Space Center has a Mars rover on its calendar.
Sundays on both bookends
Brazil anchors the month with its municipal elections, fixed by law to the Sundays at each end. The first round falls on Sunday, October 1 and the runoffs on Sunday, October 29. About 5,500 municipalities vote for mayors and councils, with runoffs where cities top 200,000 voters. Each election Sunday is followed by a Monday inside the month.
Europe changes its clocks on Sunday, October 29 as well, falling back to winter time on the month's last Sunday. The United States waits one more week, until Sunday, November 5. For one misaligned week, transatlantic calls and flight times sit an hour off their usual groove.
A dark sky for the pennant race
The moon handles the month's lighting. A full moon on Tuesday, October 3, this year's Harvest Moon and the closest full moon to the September equinox, brightens the first evenings. Last quarter passes on Wednesday, October 11, and the new moon on Wednesday, October 18 turns the late-month nights as dark as they get. An October Harvest Moon is an occasional thing; the last one came in 2020.
The darkness is well timed. The World Series window falls in late October, and first quarter does not return until Wednesday, October 25. The championship nights play out under no moon at all. The year's only Friday the 13th lands on Friday, October 13. It sits neatly between the full moon of Tuesday, October 3 and the last quarter of Wednesday, October 11.
One narrow window to Mars
Earth and Mars line up briefly this autumn, and the corridor opens over Florida. ESA's Rosalind Franklin rover holds a launch target no earlier than this month. It rides a NASA-provided Falcon Heavy from Kennedy Space Center, with a Mars landing planned for 2030. China's Tianwen-3 sample-return mission queues for the December-January window behind it, two governments aiming through one narrow alignment.
Between launch watches, the working month is moderate: 22 business days and 9 weekend days in the 31, spread across weeks 39 to 44. Five Sundays make the month feel roomy before the moonless nights even enter the count.
October 2028 holds the year's only Friday the 13th and a rover bound for Mars. Keep the late nights free.
