October 2025 Calendar: The Hunter's Supermoon Streak
October 2025 gave the moon a starring role. The Hunter's Moon on October 7 was the second of three straight supermoons, booked between September 7 and November 5. Below it, the month ran 31 days from a Wednesday start, with five Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays down the middle. There were 23 business days, and the month was long and brightly lit.
The shape of October 2025
October opened on Wednesday, October 1 and closed on Friday, October 31. A 31-day month that starts on a Wednesday stacks its extras midweek. The count ran to five Wednesdays, five Thursdays and five Fridays, with four of every other weekday. Weeks 40 to 44 held it, with 23 business days and eight weekend days.
Clocks split by continent: most of Europe fell back on October 26 while North America waited until November 2. Two Sundays, two systems, one month of slightly mismatched time zones. Your cross-ocean video calls knew something you did not.
The supermoon streak
The Hunter's Moon on October 7 was the streak's middle act, rising larger and brighter than an average full moon. The last quarter arrived on October 13, the new moon on October 21 and the first quarter on October 29. Either side of midmonth, the nights ran dark and useful for stargazers.
Supermoon is not a technical term, but the run was real. Three consecutive full moons, on September 7, October 7 and November 5, sat close enough to Earth to earn it. The moon was on a streak and clearly knew it.
The month's ledger
Money led the news. The US federal government shut down at 12:01 a.m. on October 1. The Senate had failed to pass a funding bill, and the lapse became the longest shutdown in the country's history.
The Federal Reserve cut rates again on October 29, bringing its target range to 3.75 to 4.00 percent. It was the second cut in two months. Gold crossed $4,000 an ounce for the first time on October 7, the metal's 45th record high of the year. It had gained more than 50 percent in 2025.
Japan's parliament elected Sanae Takaichi as the country's first female prime minister on October 21. The Nobel medicine prize went on October 6 to Shimon Sakaguchi, Mary Brunkow and Fred Ramsdell. They discovered regulatory T cells, the immune system's built-in brakes. The Peace Prize followed on October 10 for Venezuela's Maria Corina Machado, honored for promoting democratic rights.
SpaceX flew Starship's eleventh test flight on October 13. The upgraded V3 upper stage survived re-entry heating and splashed down in the Indian Ocean. McLaren clinched the Formula 1 constructors' championship at the Singapore Grand Prix on October 5. George Russell won the race for Mercedes.
Cinemas ran quiet. Tron: Ares led after its October 10 opening. The Black Phone 2 topped the October 17 weekend. Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc opened No. 1 on October 24.
Hurricane Melissa
The month's hardest news came near its end. Hurricane Melissa, a Category 5 storm with 185 mph winds, devastated southern Jamaica on October 28. The landfall ranked among the strongest Atlantic landfalls on record. The regional death toll approached 100 across Jamaica, Haiti and Cuba, with losses above $12 billion.
Middle supermoon, record shutdown: October 2025 carried both.
