October 2026: Nobel week and five Saturdays
October 2026 runs 31 days, opens on a Thursday and closes on a Saturday, and it front-loads its ceremony. Nobel week occupies the stretch from Monday 5 October to Friday 9 October: the medicine medal went to the inventors of optogenetics on the Monday, the literature medal to the Canadian poet Anne Carson on the Thursday, and the peace medal to the South African judge Navi Pillay on the Friday. Five Thursdays, five Fridays and five Saturdays frame the whole affair. Twenty-two business days hold it up.
Arithmetic with a weekend tilt
Saturdays arrive on the 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th and 31st. Fridays land on the 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th. Thursdays complete the set on the 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th. Nine weekend days, 22 business days, weeks 40 to 44. The month is heavier at the end of its weeks than at the start.
The full moon falls on Monday 26 October, and the new moon arrived earlier, on Saturday 10 October. Anyone planning evening walks gets a bright final week, once the hour is claimed back.
Prizes, dockings and votes
SpaceX flew Crew-13 to the International Space Station on Thursday 1 October. The capsule docked the next day after a record seven hours and fifty-five minutes. The G7, that same Friday, agreed to release 100 million barrels of oil and diesel from emergency reserves over four months. October does not dawdle.
Sunday 25 October did triple duty. Europe's clocks, Britain's included, went back an hour as summer time ended. Brazil's runoff returned Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for a fourth presidential term.
In Serbia, a student-led list won about fifty-three percent of the vote and the incumbent conceded after twelve years. Israel's election followed on Tuesday 27 October, leaving Benjamin Netanyahu's bloc short of a majority.
The voting had opened in Quebec on Monday 5 October, with a minority result for the Parti Québécois. Closer to home, England and Wales began releasing low-risk prisoners early on Thursday 1 October, in response to crowded jails. Western Sydney's second airport welcomed its first passengers on Sunday 25 October. A month of ballots, run politely.
A cruel final week
The gravest news came late. A school roof collapsed during morning classes in Peshawar on Thursday 15 October, killing at least 34 children and a teacher. On Wednesday 28 October a high-speed train struck a stationary one near Toledo in Spain. At least 69 people died, and three days of national mourning followed.
The same Wednesday night brought the sporting finish. Milwaukee won baseball's World Series in Game 5, a first title for the club in fifty-seven years. Grief and celebration shared a date, and the month held both.
November 2026 opens on a Sunday, with Liverpool hosting Arsenal at Anfield on the first of them. A pencil, and the wall, will do the rest.
