September 2026: five Tuesdays, five Wednesdays
September 2026 was the month summer handed in its notice. Thirty days, opening on Tuesday 1 September and closing on Wednesday 30 September, with five of each of those weekdays tucked inside. The equinox brought autumn officially on Wednesday 23 September, and the full moon followed on Saturday 26 September. Before the month had even settled, Kimi Antonelli had won the Italian Grand Prix at Monza on Sunday 6 September, from nineteenth on the grid, the first Italian home winner since 1966. Twenty-two business days did the quiet work in between.
Two weekdays, five rounds each
Tuesdays arrived on the 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th. Wednesdays matched them on the 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th. Everything else turned up four times, leaving 22 business days and eight weekend days across weeks 36 to 40. A tidy ledger, with autumn starting on a Wednesday as if by appointment.
The moon favoured Fridays. Last quarter fell on Friday 4 September, the new moon on Friday 11 September and first quarter on Friday 18 September. The full moon broke ranks on Saturday 26 September.
Courts, tracks and a record
The US Open closed the tennis summer. Elena Rybakina came from a set down to beat Aryna Sabalenka on Saturday 12 September. Alexander Zverev beat Ben Shelton in four sets the following afternoon, Sunday 13 September, for his first title in New York.
Ireland supplied the month's loudest farewell. Katie Taylor outpointed Flora Pili at Croke Park on Saturday 5 September, before about eighty thousand people. She retired as undisputed super-lightweight champion. The Asian Games opened in Nagoya on Saturday 19 September and ran through to Sunday 4 October.
Television's Emmy night arrived on Monday 14 September. Widow's Bay collected fourteen statuettes, a comedy-series record, while The Pitt defended best drama.
Sweden voted on Sunday 13 September and produced a three-seat margin, 176 to 173; the incumbent government fell. Morocco appointed Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri, its first female prime minister, on Tuesday 29 September.
The month's losses
September carried grief as well. A fire consumed the ferry MV June Aster off Coron in the Philippines on Wednesday 9 September. At least 76 people died. Norway mourned; Haakon was sworn in as King Haakon VIII on Tuesday 1 September, days after his father's death.
For a brighter footnote, New Zealand's kākāpō numbers passed three hundred for the first time in seventy-five years. The month absorbed all of it.
October 2026 opened on a Thursday and closed on a Saturday, keeping five Thursdays, five Fridays and five Saturdays. The printer will want the whole sheet.
