May 2026: ten weekend days and two full moons
May 2026 was the month that paid in weekends. It opened on Friday 1 May and closed on Sunday 31 May, a full moon at each end. Inside that frame sat five Fridays, five Saturdays and five Sundays. Ten weekend days in all: more than any other month in the first half of the year. Business days numbered just 21, across ISO weeks 18 to 22. For anyone running a family rota or a five-a-side league, the arithmetic tilts towards rest.
The five-five-five month
The five Fridays arrived on the 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th. The five Saturdays followed on the 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th. The five Sundays completed the set on the 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th and 31st. Ten weekend days in all, more than any other month in the first half of 2026.
Mondays through Thursdays got four turns each. Monday 25 May stretched the closing weekend to three days for many workers. The printed grid takes no credit for it. Business days numbered just 21, across ISO weeks 18 to 22.
Ballots, a song contest and a final
Voters across the United Kingdom went to the polls on Thursday 7 May. The local elections ran alongside Scottish Parliament and Senedd votes. The results varied sharply by nation, as British results increasingly do. Three sets of counts made one long night for the tellers.
Vienna hosted the seventieth Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday 23 May. Bulgaria's DARA won with Bangaranga, her country's first title. The United Kingdom finished last, a fact the scoreboard stated without sympathy.
The football season closed on Saturday 30 May in Budapest. Paris Saint-Germain beat Arsenal 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw. The Parisians retained the Champions League and lifted a second European Cup.
Margins measured in decimals
American sport ran on fine margins that month. A 24-1 outsider named Golden Tempo won the Kentucky Derby on Saturday 2 May. Trainer Cherie DeVaux became the first woman to saddle a Derby winner.
At Indianapolis on Sunday 24 May, Felix Rosenqvist edged David Malukas by 0.023 seconds. No previous Indianapolis 500 had finished so close.
The gap is smaller than a blink, and the replay merely confirms it. That weekend belonged to the stopwatch.
Parades, an emergency and two moons
A scaled-down military parade crossed Moscow on Saturday 9 May. A three-day ceasefire in Ukraine held, at best, in part.
On Sunday 17 May, the World Health Organization declared the Ebola epidemic a global health emergency. It spanned the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda. Colombia opened a two-round presidential contest on Sunday 31 May.
The moon, indifferent to all of it, filled twice: on Friday 1 May and again on Sunday 31 May. The second filling counts as a blue moon, the month's spare one. It rose over the year's most generous grid.
May ended on Sunday 31 May with the moon full twice over. June began the next morning, on Monday 1 June, pointing at the longest day.
