June 2026: World Cup kick-off and the longest day

June 2026 ran its two biggest stories on consecutive days. The expanded World Cup opened at Mexico City's Estadio Azteca on Thursday 11 June. No stadium had staged three World Cups before. Co-hosts Mexico beat South Africa 2-0. A day later, on Friday 12 June, SpaceX listed on Nasdaq under the ticker SPCX. It was the largest initial public offering on record. The grid between those headlines stayed tidy: 30 days from Monday 1 June to Tuesday 30 June. Five Mondays, five Tuesdays and 22 business days filled it.

Midweek, by design

The five Mondays opened the weeks on the 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th. The five Tuesdays followed on the 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th. Every other weekday took four turns, and the weekends numbered eight days. The month filled ISO weeks 23 to 27 exactly, without a sixth.

It is a midweek-heavy shape. Fixtures that land on a Tuesday got five chances this month, and Saturday leagues got four. The longest day of the northern year arrived on Sunday 21 June. The extra daylight went to a weekend anyway.

One fortnight, two openings

The football came first. Mexico City's Estadio Azteca, which had staged two World Cups before, opened its third on Thursday 11 June. Sixteen host cities across North America began rearranging their working days around lunchtime and evening kick-offs.

The markets answered within a day. SpaceX closed its first session up 19 percent on Friday 12 June, at a valuation above two trillion dollars. The G7 summit opened at Evian on Monday 15 June, with energy security atop the agenda. The new moon that night left the early group games under properly dark skies.

Grass, clay and the longest evening

Mirra Andreeva won her first Grand Slam at Roland Garros on Saturday 6 June. She beat the qualifier Maja Chwalinska 6-3 6-2. Wimbledon opened at the All England Club on Monday 29 June, with the month's full moon due that evening. The grass-court fortnight ran on into July.

The solstice had passed through on Sunday 21 June, with the moon at first quarter. From there the evenings shorten, slowly at first, which the deckchairs refuse to acknowledge.

June's heavy ledger

June carried heavy losses as well. Gunmen killed twelve people at an informal settlement in Johannesburg on Wednesday 10 June. Two powerful earthquakes struck northern Venezuela within a minute on Wednesday 24 June, and the death toll climbed past 6,500. Colombia's runoff went the way of Abelardo De La Espriella on Sunday 21 June.

Quieter news rewarded attention. Cambridge researchers reported a genuine first on Friday 5 June. Their vaccine's key antigen was designed entirely by AI, a universal coronavirus candidate, and it had reached human trials.

Ethiopians voted in a general election on Monday 1 June. The month kept both columns of the ledger.

June closed on Tuesday 30 June with the tournament two weeks old. July inherits the football, the strawberries and the weather's undivided attention.
