May 2027: ten weekend days and six week numbers
Dispatch from a month built in weekends. May 2027 opens on Saturday 1 May, which is Derby day in Louisville. It closes on Monday 31 May. This year that Monday is a day off on both sides of the Atlantic. Such agreement is rare, and worth marking. Inside the frame sit five Saturdays, five Sundays and as many Mondays. That makes 10 weekend days, the quarter's biggest haul. Our correspondent has checked the arithmetic twice. A full 21 business days remain for everything else.
Six week numbers, ten weekend days
Saturdays fall on 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 May. Sundays trail them by a day, on 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30 May. Mondays finish the sequence on 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31 May. Ten of the 31 squares are weekend days, and the other 21 are business days.
The ISO week numbers run 17 to 22, six in all. Week 17 arrives shared with April, and week 22 leaves shared with June. No other month before July spans six week numbers. It makes the most of the privilege.
Saturdays with signatures
Each Saturday holds something. The Kentucky Derby ran on Saturday 1 May at Churchill Downs. Eurovision's grand final takes Saturday 15 May in Burgas, after semi-finals on Tuesday 11 and Thursday 13 May. The middle Saturday of five belongs to the song contest.

The closing fortnight
The PGA Championship plays Monday 17 to Sunday 23 May at Fields Ranch East in Frisco, Texas. The championship has never been played there before. The Canadian Grand Prix weekend follows on Friday 21 to Sunday 23 May in Montreal. The full moon arrives on Thursday 20 May, inside the golf.
Cannes runs its fortnight from Tuesday 11 to Saturday 22 May. Star Wars: Starfighter opens in cinemas on Friday 28 May. Sunday 30 May then stacks the Indianapolis 500 over all ten final-day Premier League matches. Monday 31 May finishes the month as a shared day off, and a good one.
Five of each weekend day, with the last Monday a day off in two countries. May 2027 knows how to leave a room.
