June 2025: a 12-day war inside one calendar month

June 2025 fit a 12-day war inside one calendar month. It began on June 13 and ended on June 24, every day of it inside the same grid. Grief arrived the day before the war, when Air India Flight 171 crashed in Ahmedabad. Around all of that, the month kept its shape: 30 days, opening on a Sunday, closing on a Monday, weeks 22 to 27.

The month's shape

Thirty days, Sunday to Monday, with five Sundays and five Mondays. Every other weekday appeared four times, for 21 business days and 9 weekend days. June 13 was a Friday, the only Friday the 13th of 2025.

The full moon arrived on June 11. The solstice followed on June 21, the year's longest days for the northern hemisphere. It came ten days after the month's fullest night. The moon worked the early shift; the sun took the late one.

A month of hard news

South Koreans elected Lee Jae-myung president on June 3, ending months of turmoil. The war in Ukraine saw one of its boldest operations on June 1. Drones smuggled in on trucks hit Russian strategic-bomber airbases, damaging or destroying dozens of long-range aircraft.

On June 12, Air India Flight 171 crashed seconds after takeoff in Ahmedabad, bound for London. The crash killed 260 people, with a single survivor among the 242 aboard.

The next day, Israel opened a sweeping air campaign against Iran's nuclear program. So began the 12-day war of missile and drone exchanges. American bombers and submarines struck Iran's Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan nuclear sites on June 22. It was the first combat use of 30,000-pound bunker-buster bombs.

G7 leaders met in Kananaskis on June 15, with the fighting overshadowing the agenda. NATO's summit in The Hague closed on June 25. All 32 allies committed to 5 percent of GDP on defense by 2035.

Five hours and 29 minutes

The French Open final on June 8 was the longest in the tournament's history: five hours and 29 minutes. Carlos Alcaraz saved three championship points to beat Jannik Sinner and retain the title. A final that long deserves its own calendar square, and the schedule nearly gave it one.

The Nintendo Switch 2 launched on June 5 and sold 3.5 million units worldwide in four days. It was the fastest console launch on record. Alex Warren's “Ordinary” ruled the Billboard Hot 100 through June, on its way to 10 weeks at number one. How to Train Your Dragon opened at number one on June 13 with about $85 million in North America.

A five-hour final and the year's longest days: June 2025 used all 30 of its squares.
