April 2025: five Tuesdays, five Wednesdays, no eclipses
April 2025 was the month the sky went quiet. March had staged both its eclipses; April staged none, and the next pair waited until September. The grid kept a steadier rhythm: 30 days from Tuesday 1 April to Wednesday 30 April. Five Tuesdays, five Wednesdays and 22 business days filled it, across ISO weeks 14 to 18. For practical purposes the early week repeated itself: Tuesday fixtures and Wednesday rotas each got five turns.
Five Tuesdays, five Wednesdays
The five Tuesdays fell on the 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th. The five Wednesdays followed on the 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th. Everything else arrived four times. Eight weekend days, 22 business days, and a last day that shut the month on a Wednesday, 30 April.
A month that begins on a Tuesday front-loads your working week. Weeks 14 to 18 each opened on a Monday and closed on a Sunday. The two extra days closed the run: the 29th was a Tuesday, and the 30th a Wednesday.
A4 with a Monday start shows the shape at a glance. The Tuesday and Wednesday columns run one square longer than the rest. Anyone rostering a weekly class got a free fifth session this month, like it or not.
Moonlight without drama
The full moon arrived on Sunday 13 April, the Pink Moon of the almanacs, and no eclipse came with it. The month's new moon fell on Sunday 27 April, leaving the closing nights dark. March had taken both eclipses; September holds the next pair. April simply kept the appointments.
Sport supplied the month's records instead. Alex Ovechkin scored his 895th career goal on Sunday 6 April, passing Wayne Gretzky to lead the NHL's all-time list. And on Sunday 27 April Liverpool beat Tottenham 5-1 at Anfield to clinch a record-equalling 20th English league title.
The month's heavier news
Pope Francis died on Monday 21 April, aged 88, after 12 years leading the Catholic Church. His funeral on Saturday 26 April drew some 250,000 people to St Peter's Square. He was buried where he had asked to be, at Santa Maria Maggiore.
On Monday 28 April a cascading power failure blacked out mainland Spain and Portugal for roughly ten hours. Southern France was briefly affected too. A film about a video game supplied the lighter memory. A Minecraft Movie opened on Friday 4 April and took about $313 million worldwide in its first weekend.
Thirty days, five Tuesdays and five Wednesdays, and not one eclipse. April 2025 kept its numbers steady and its sky empty, which some months is the better half of the bargain.
