August 2025 Calendar: Ten Weekend Days and Twin Moons
August 2025 could not fit a tidy lunar cycle into its 31 days, so it ran the first quarter twice. A first-quarter moon opened the month on August 1 and a second closed it on August 31. The full moon of August 9 sat between them. The month ran from a Friday start, spent 10 of its 31 days on weekends and kept 21 for business.
The weekend-heavy shape of August 2025
Opening on Friday, August 1 handed the month five Fridays, five Saturdays and five Sundays. It closed on Sunday, August 31, a neat bookend of its own. Weeks 31 to 35 carried the whole thing.
Business days fell to 21, down from July's 23. Ten weekend days was the summer's ceiling, and August 2025 hit it. A month that opens on a Friday is already leaning toward the weekend; this one never stood back up.
The moon's double shift
The moon ran a double shift. It hit first quarter on August 1, full on August 9 and last quarter on August 16. The new moon fell on August 23. Then came a second first quarter on August 31.
Two first-quarter moons in a single month happen when the lunar cycle fits inside 31 days with room to spare. The full moon of August 9 sat at the center of that ladder like a checkpoint.
Stargazers got their darkest stretch around the August 23 new moon. By August 31 the month had run out of moon and started over. September kept the change.
Tariffs, models and made-up bands
The month ran on a trade clock. Higher United States tariffs on dozens of trading partners took effect on August 1. The list included 35 percent on many Canadian goods. On August 12, talks in Stockholm produced a 90-day extension of the US-China tariff truce, pausing duty increases into November.
OpenAI released GPT-5 to all ChatGPT users on August 7. It unified the fast and reasoning model lines in the year's flagship launch. The horror film Weapons opened at No. 1 on August 8 with about $42 million.
Taylor Swift announced her 12th album, The Life of a Showgirl, at 12:12 a.m. on August 12. A countdown clock had teased it. A made-up group topped a very real chart: “Golden” by HUNTR/X, the fictional band from Netflix's KPop Demon Hunters. It reached No. 1 on the Hot 100 in mid-August and stayed for weeks.
The month's losses
August also carried hard losses. A boat carrying Ethiopian migrants across the Gulf of Aden capsized off Yemen on August 3. At least 68 people died, with dozens more missing.
A military helicopter crashed in Ghana's Ashanti region on August 6, killing eight people. The dead included the defense and environment ministers. A railway bridge under construction collapsed into the Yellow River in Qinghai, China, on August 22. At least 12 workers died.
Two first-quarter moons and ten weekend days: August 2025 did most of its living at the edges.
