December 2027: 23 Business Days, Monday Moons
Dispatch, Monday, December 13: the full moon rose tonight, on time, like every phase this month. The Moon does nothing in December 2027 except on Mondays. First quarter the 6th, full the 13th, last quarter the 20th, new the 27th. The month runs 31 days, opens on a Wednesday and closes on a Friday. It stacks five Wednesdays, five Thursdays and five Fridays, and turns at the solstice on Wednesday, December 22.
The fullest grid of the half
December 2027 carries 23 business days, more than any month from July onward, against eight weekend days. It spans weeks 48 to 52, the year's last five numbered weeks. Fridays fall on December 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31. Saturdays fall on the 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th. Sundays fall on the 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th.
The solstice arrives on Wednesday, December 22. It is the year's shortest day north of the equator, the longest south of it. No eclipse falls anywhere in the last quarter of 2027; the sky contents itself with the Moon's Monday habit.
A sparse month, honestly
Little else on the month's grid carries a confirmed date, and this page does not pretend otherwise. The Nobel Prizes were presented on Friday, December 10, the traditional date, in Stockholm and Oslo. Avengers: Secret Wars opens on Friday, December 17, closing out Marvel's Multiverse Saga. Both dated Fridays, the 10th and the 17th, sit a week apart in the same column of the grid. The Melbourne Cricket Ground starts its traditional summer Test on Sunday, December 26. The solstice had opened the southern beach season four days earlier.
The trends fill the gaps. Long-haul and family travel peaks through the month, against fixed airport and rail capacity. Video calls cover whichever half of the family could not get a seat. Live sport keeps drifting onto streaming apps into the year-end, blackouts included. Beyond the dated few, the schedulers of the world have mostly left the month alone. Our desk's remedy is older: paper, one line per day, no battery.
Ending the year on paper
Front-load the 23 business days; the back of the month will not thank you for deadlines. Treat the five Wednesdays as workhorses, with the solstice on the fourth of them, December 22.
After the new moon of Monday, December 27, the year's final nights run dark and moonless. Dark skies make good company for year-end arithmetic. December 31 is a Friday.
January 1, 2028 arrives the next morning, and 2028 is a leap year. Print next year's grid early. Workloads bend around the month's ends in every hemisphere; the grid does not, which is its virtue.
The Moon kept Mondays, the calendar kept its squares, and the year closes on time. That is more than most of us manage.
