November 2028: the vote, then the statute
Dispatch, Wednesday 15 November 2028. America voted eight days ago, and the timetable has been in charge ever since. The month spans Wednesday 1 to Thursday 30 November, 30 days of it, keeping five Wednesdays and five Thursdays. Each of the other five weekdays manages four. The clocks went back on Sunday 5 November, so the count proceeds under an extra hour of evening dark. Weeks 44 to 48 carry the month. The next date fixed in law is Tuesday 19 December, when the electors meet.
The Tuesday after the first Monday
Election Day fell on Tuesday 7 November, the Tuesday after the first Monday, as United States statute requires. Voters chose a president, all 435 members of the House and a third of the Senate. The vote arrived two days into winter time, and many commutes to the polls began in the dark.
Australia's Melbourne Cup ran that Tuesday too; the race belongs to whichever Tuesday comes first in November. It was over in minutes. The count is still running, and the law prefers it that way.
The count runs on rails
The ballot opened a timeline set down in law decades ago, long before anyone knew the names on the ticket. Certification in each state stretches the results over weeks, whatever the margin. The electors meet under the statute on Tuesday 19 December, the first Tuesday after the second Wednesday of December.
The result changes nothing on this timetable; that is the timetable's whole idea. The morning after the vote, advertising went back to cars and cereal. The statute, meanwhile, keeps every appointment.
The thick middle
Wednesdays run the 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th. Thursdays follow on the 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th. Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays stop at four each. That leaves 22 business days and 8 weekend days across weeks 44 to 48.
The moon keeps weekly step. It is full on Thursday 2 November, with last quarter on Thursday 9 and new moon on Thursday 16, tomorrow.
First quarter breaks the pattern on Friday 24 November. The month closes midweek, on Thursday 30 November, and hands December a fixed appointment. No eclipse and no solstice; the sky leaves the month to the counters.
Dark commutes and statutory patience: November 2028 in two phrases. The moon walked the Thursdays without fuss, then slipped its one Friday in on the 24th.
